Rothenend steeples his fingers, bringing them to his lips as he studies Asra impassively. "Everything. Nothing. And all of it at once," he says finally. "You obviously saw some of these things when you walked in. You've seen some of these things even here, behind the Wards, though you may not have realized it. Things we've come to rely on, everyday items whose enchantments we've never given a second thought to, fail in unexpected ways. People appear and disappear with memories of events that have never happened, of people that have never existed."

He turns and gestures at the wall opposite the door and images once again spring into existence, a mosaic of scenes in a dozen different locations, none of them the same as those Asra glimpsed when she first came in. Some of them seem quite normal: a slice of everyday life from before the war. Some of them are unbelievable: storms in unnatural hues that sweep across landscapes like something out of a fever dream.
Asra stared intently at the screens, absorbing the information they contained. At the same time, the Headmaster's words rang true. Much of what she had seen had been caused, whether directly or indirectly, by the failing of the wards. The rifts between pages. The missing memories and missing people. The shades. The riots... Cayla...

With Cayla in her mind, she feels she recognizes some of the scenes before her. From descriptions from Eldarin of Cayla's visions. Of the visions she gathered for Rothenend.

She steels her heart, placing a hand over her chest where Cayla's ashes lay, and reminds herself that she shouldn't trust this man. No matter what.
"The Wards protect us from the worst of this... unmooring that the rest of the world is experiencing. But even here in Meriava, our anchor is slipping. Without a way to keep us tied to the dock, we may yet go adrift. Without the Wards, we're a cork bobbing free in a raging storm."

He studies the wall for a moment, gestures it blank once more, then turns back to Asra. "The hardest part, the thing that keeps me awake at night, is that none of it is constant. What is real and true on one day might change a day later, a week later, a month later. Or not at all. How do we rebuild when what we build might not be there tomorrow? When reality itself is subjective?"

He stabs a finger atop the table. "That is what is so dangerous about Master Adaye playing around with this... device. The potential for it to affect the Wards, to let the outside in, is a risk I cannot accept. Not until we've determined how to firmly anchor ourselves in reality again."
She brings her gaze back to the Headmaster, resolution in her eyes, as she listens to him. "So, the device must be studied regardless of Adaye's intentions," she agrees. "Whatever risk it poses, we have to find a way to either negate it, or turn it to our advantage. If you could become another anchor, even a temporary one, we might stave off potential destruction another day."

She looks down, pensively, still considering. Still thinking. "If this is the case, and all of this is happening, and not happening, and... whatever it is... Then wouldn't it be prudent to bring this information to other leaders within the city?" She heads him off before his inevitable argument. "Not the public, certainly. Such information would only serve to frighten them, and any with family outside of the wards might be galvanized by the information and attempt to bring the wards down anyway. But the leaders of the rioters, and of the city, and most certainly of the college itself should be made aware."

"If we can bring them all together, or at least placate some of the troublemakers, then we can cease fighting a war on two fronts, and focus on this catastrophe with the attention it demands."

"Oh. Oh! Like... lie in wait?" Garnyn says, excitement picking up the pace of his words. "What do they call it in the stories? A stakeout? Let's do it. I love it."
It's an incredibly minor sort of operation compared to what Iana has heard her field-agent Obsidian colleagues describing, but still. They are setting a trap and waiting for someone to fall into it! "It is a stakeout," Iana declares, with a tiny hint of defiance.

A stakeout! Her very first one!
Figuring that they want to improve their odds of attracting someone, they set the trap with a pair of the books they've gathered: the Kasiali nobility book and the payroll reports from Nsuya Tiya Enterprises. With the light globes failing off and on, there are plenty of shadowed spots from which to watch the study table holding the books.

Unfortunately, there's very little to see. Once, a dark-haired fellow with a limp finds his way to the table and stops to look curiously at the books, but he leaves again with a confused shrug. But for some time, that's all the action that happens.
Iana follows Garnyn back into the darkness, hiding her pale face and bright hair within the depths of the shadows as she pressed back against a wall. When the dark-haired man approaches, Iana leans slightly forward, interest piquing. Who is that? Not anyone connected with what they're investigating, apparently: he moves on, and Iana sits back with a sigh of faint disappointment.
"This is much more exciting in the stories," Garnyn admits after a while. "Tell me something about you to pass the time," he says softly. "Let's see... did you grow up in Meriava? Do you have family here?"
She's happy to pass the time in conversation, too, as the minutes stretch on. "Yes, I've lived here all my life," she explains, keeping her voice pitched carefully low. "My parents work in the city government - Mother is in the Ministry of Transport and Father is in the Ministry of Communication. They were hoping I'd be Jade, actually," she adds, with a brief smile and a tilt of her head towards Garnyn.

He shakes his head in wonderment. "You never can tell about people."
"She wanted some training in self-defense," Finch says. "She's not just a pretty face." A moment's uncertainty flickers through Finch's mind, echoed faintly on her face. She had thought that she was the one doing the seducing there, but... was it actually the other way around? She purses her lips while she chews on that question a moment. Did she get... played? Does it matter? The princess might need to answer a few questions.

Karok nods. "That's some weird shit going on there. I always thought Adaye and the Headmaster were tight. Something's definitely not right. Hope you found a good Advocate. You'll say if there's something I -- we -- can help with." He gestures to Finch to include her in the 'we'. It's not phrased as a question.

"Weird shit going on is the rule of the day. Today and every day, apparently," echoes Finch. "Asra's off talking to the Headmaster, giving her report from our jaunt into the city." She flexes her fingers a couple of times. "I tried to go with her, but..." With a sigh, she finishes. "I just hope she doesn't end up in a cell too. Or worse."

Karok nods again, solemnly. "Any idea what the Master wants? Something with the lockdown, maybe?"

That we cannot simply 'open the wards and reestablish trade'."

He leans forward, fixing Asra with a stare. "There. Is. No. Trade. What pockets of civilization I've been able to locate are gone in a day, a week, a month, dragged to some other point of reality. You come from a privileged background. You've undoubtedly used teleport circles to move about. Do you know what happens when the place you think you're teleporting to is no longer there? That's what these 'negotiations' need to focus on."

"Wait," Garnyn says, his eyes widening. He realizes that he's almost certainly spoken too loudly and claps a hand over his mouth. When he continues, he spreads his fingers just wide enough to let the sound come out. "Your father is Halaenarin. How did I never realize that? I've worked with him a few times. I had a project on cross-cultural communication techniques in Ardraven, which is just an incredible mosaic of cultures, and he was so helpful and friendly. I still remember what he told me about the northern Ardraveni and how you had to be careful talking about the stars, since they consider them to be the spirits of their ancestors. Made me want to visit. I was planning some field work there, in fact, but..." He gestures nonspecifically, the familiar 'but the Wards' sort of gesture common in Meriava these days. "Is it nice having them around? I'm grateful for the kinship here. It's not my true kinship back home, but I can't imagine not having the community here. I understand it can be different for the Unjoined though."

Have you seen the consequences of matter transference gone wrong? I don't recommend it. Traveling over land or by waterway is almost as dangerous."
Asra lowers her head, ashamed at her own naivety. In a way, he was right. There was little chance that those outside of the college would understand, or that they wouldn't try to use the scarcity and lack of trade to line their own pockets. Not only that, she was pretty sure she'd seen what the Headmaster was talking about.

Her mind flashed to images of Cayla from that night. Images that she desperately tried to put out of mind. While she knew that Cayla's circumstances had been different... the results were much the same.
"There may be a way that we can carefully expand out from Meriava to anchor bits and pieces of the world to a consistent reality. But... we are a long way from that. If you want to ease tensions in the city, then it will take convincing the fools that hoard their wealth and resources against a day when the Wards open, to provide more for the people of Meriava while we continue to work toward a solution for what lies outside. That's what these 'negotiations' need to focus on."
Her jaw tightens in frustration. Her thoughts of Cayla helping to reorient her mind against the Headmaster's manipulation. He complained of others hoarding resources, but he sat atop a pedestal of one of the most valuable resources: information. She was certain that he knew the power he held, and was simply trying to justify his decision to hold onto it at any cost.

She was uncertain that he was wrong about other leaders in the city. In fact, she was almost certain that he was right. But regardless, he was no different than them. A terrible, old man trying to maintain an iron-grip on the authority he had during an uncertain time. Any threats to that authority, like Master Adaye, were to be removed so that, when he finally weathered the storm, he'd still have his little mountain of rubble her could rule over.

She fought against her bitterness, relaxing her shoulders and addressing what the Headmaster had said. "You're right, Headmaster," she told him. "I, above anyone else, should understand how naive it is to expect other leaders in the city to understand what it is we face." Keeping her eyes averted, she adopted a posture of submission. She would do what he said... for now.

The moment that Garnyn's expression began to change, Iana knows what he is going to say. She has heard it more times than she can count: her outgoing father is well known in certain circles of the city bureaucracy, and even if her family were not the only one in Meriava to bear their distinctively Elven name, Iana might be recognized for her resemblance to Halaenarin.

From Garnyn, she doesn't mind as much as she does from some. "He'll be happy to hear that you remember his advice," Iana replies, with an honest smile - even if it slips a little as she gives her own little 'but the Wards' gesture in return, and sighs, "Right. I hope you do get to go there someday."
"Is it nice having them around? I'm grateful for the kinship here. It's not my true kinship back home, but I can't imagine not having the community here. I understand it can be different for the Unjoined though."
Iana nods thoughtfully. "Yes, it is, actually. It's good to know they're there if I need them." Which is something she definitely would not have, said, as the teenager who climbed through Tisara's window every other week. "Our family isn't very large - just the three of us, no other connections in the city. But that meant that my friends were almost like siblings when I was growing up. Georg's sister Ayla, and - and some others." Even though she is just as close to Tisara, if not closer, she doesn't say her name - she hates that she even has to think it, but if someone is listening, the name 'Firefly' might jump out of an otherwise blur of whispered words.

"But of course it's also harder to make my own way, with everyone knowing them," Iana continues, quickly switching directions.

"You know, sometimes I hate that you're as big as a fucking mountain and too damned quick for me to knock you in the fucking dirt, Georg Elsebethson," Finch says. "Lucky for both of us that I like you enough to forgive you for being such a smart ass." She sidles up next to him and gives him a shove with her shoulder. "Asshole," she says, laughing.
Georg Elsebethson wrote: Wed Jan 15, 2025 7:16 pm Georg puts up his hands. "Your guess is as good as mine. He wanted my 'insights' on something. Karok nods. "Also the rule of today and everyday. That man never wastes a word," he mutters and plants his hands on his hips. "Well. Better not keep you waiting any more."

Finch squeezes Georg's arm, as much of it as she can get her hand around anyway. "Look us up when you get out, yeah? Between worrying about you and Asra and just about everybody else, I'm as jumpy as a landed fish. I'll be in the practice yards beating on some dummies."

They stand aside to let Georg continue on his way to the Master's offices. Like so much of Granite grounds, the administrative headquarters of the College are utilitarian and highly organized. On most days. On this day, it's a little like someone took the entire building, gave it a good shaking, and set it back down backward. The building staff are harried, scurrying this way and that to find the right person to receive the latest report from the gates or outside the walls, but no one seems to know where the right people are at the moment even though their schedules state very clearly they should be in this room right here, and should have been there for the last 15 minutes.

One person that Georg recognizes vaguely as one of the head administrative staff stops in front of him, realizing her path is blocked. "Yes? What fresh hell have you brought us?" she asks impatiently.

When Georg explains that he's here to see Master Antior and would be glad to get out of her way as a result, she steps to one side and points down the hallway. "Last door on the right. I hope for your sake he's expecting you," she says. When he doesn't immediately step to it, she makes a shooing gesture with her free hand, the other hand occupied with a sheaf of reports. "Go. Move along," she says, then scurries off to complete her current errand.

A few more people dodge out of Georg's way. One small man emits a high-pitched squeak as he almost flattens himself into Georg's leg, then spins and keeps moving. But the secretary at least gave Georg good directions: the Master's office is exactly where she said and the door is ajar.

When he knocks and pokes his head in, he sees Antior standing behind a massive desk, cross-referencing something in a large open book against a stack of papers next to it. Everything on the desk -- everything in the office, in fact -- is exquisitely organized. Every painting is straight. The carpet in front of the desk is in exact line with the furniture, placed in the exact center of the room. The desk doesn't have a stray paper anywhere. Even the five pencils lined up in a row atop the desk have their points lined up evenly next to one another.

The door emits a faint creak. Antior lifts only his eyes in response, head still bent over his work.

"Scholar," he says, acknowledging Georg's presence. "Come in. Shut the door behind you." Antior ruffles the stack of papers, tapping the short edge against the desktop to get them into order, then sets them aside, closing the book and setting it atop the stack.

Rothenend studies Asra for a long moment, perhaps gauging her sincerity. Whatever he finds there, he is apparently satisfied with it. "Very well," he says. He pushes himself up to standing. "You may wait here while we put together a pass for you to speak with Adaye."

He looks as if he might say more, but in the end only the corner of his mouth lifts up in a half-smile. The Headmaster walks out of the room, letting the door swing closed behind him.

Asra finds herself alone in the Headmaster's office. Who knows how long she might have before he returns? Who knows how much he'll know if she snoops? The opportunity, however, is certainly available.
